Frac Alsace

The Frac Alsace was created in 1982 by the Ministry of Culture and the Regional Council as part of the decentralization policy. It contributes to the development of contemporary creation through acquisition, the dissemination of works of art and the awareness of wider publics.

The various artistic projects developed by successive directors have interrogated territories, landscapes, identities. The FRAC Alsace now has a rich collection of more than 1000 works of art, representing more than 600 artists.

It organizes exhibitions every year in its spaces in Sélestat and outside its walls, and various educational proposals. About a third of the collection is presented in different places, mainly in Alsace.

The FRAC Alsace also implements artist residencies in the region.
Since 2000, the FRAC garden has been entrusted to artists for multi-year projects. After Bertrand Lavier and then Nicolas Boulard, the «Schatz & Jardin» project of Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger takes place in 2021.

Chaired by Pascal Mangin, also President of the Commission Culture of the Région Grand Est authority, the FRAC Alsace is headed by Felizitas Diering.

In the Grand Est region, the FRAC Alsace collaborates with the 49 Nord 6 Est – FRAC Lorraine and the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, seeking to open up new perspectives and areas of reflection on the notions of territory and cultural outreach initiatives.

Their strategic geographical position allows them to develop cross-border and international projects and, with their expertise, to open a debate on the challenges of a contemporary collection in the 21st century.

Felizitas Diering, director of the Frac Alsace since 2017.

Felizitas Diering (1982, Chemnitz, D) graduated in art history and literature from the Albert-Ludwig University of Fribourg-en-Brisgau. She has lived in the United States, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic and, since 2017, in France where she is director of the FRAC Alsace. The artistic project «Natures» that she develops invites us to think on the place of works of art in an open system defending an interdisciplinary and transversal approach to contemporary creation.
